Whip Up a Fabulous DIY Burberry-Inspired Holiday Party Dress by Upcycling a Vintage or Thrift Store Pleated Skirt.

Pleated skirt

I love-love-love pleats and love-love-love this DIY by blogger Sarah Choi. Mostly because it’s super-simple with barely any sewing – really! – and the outcome is so chic. If you don’t have a long silk pleated skirt stashed in the dusty depths of your closet, snag one from the thrift store. Vintage is best because they used better fabrics back in the day, and the construction was superior.

When you turn the skirt into a dress, the waistline will become the neckline of the dress; hold the new neckline up to your collarbone level to see where the hem of the finished dress will hit you. If you’re buying online, and, for example you find a skirt that’s 35″ long, Picture 759simply take out your tape measure and put your finger on 35″. Then place your finger & the tape measure at the point where your neck meets your shoulder and let the tape measure hang down – the end will tell you where the skirt will hit you.

To finish the look, either use your own belt or make one from the extra fabric that got cut away.

Crafty Sarah also came up with this clever necklace hack – inspired by one from Anthropologie – & has the tutorial for that posted as well.  Just think of all the vintage pleated silk skirts you could liberate, as well as kitschy-cool floral cocktail rings and earrings into a new life of fashion fabulousness with these clever DIYs.
