She has recently written and illustrated her own children’s book called Monty and The Travelling Show.

Much of Emma's work is playful and interactive with the use of velcro and magnets, allowing others to contribute to the magical world she has created.
She can usually be found cutting and sticking to create collages, as well as illustrating and printmaking.

What was the inspiration behind your final collection / project?

I was inspired by Peter Blake’s Museum of Everything, Victorian taxidermy and the circus. I wanted to use the idea of hybrid taxidermy animals – where people create beasts that are a mix of two or more animals. I enjoy designing for children so I had to figure out a way of using this idea in a ‘nice’ way.

Describe the key features of your collection / project?

My project is called Monty and the Travelling Show and it is an illustrated story about a self-conscious badger who wants to change the way he looks so he can perform in the circus. Monty hates his nose and thinks he would look better if he looked like other animals…he wants chicken feathers, an elephant trunk, a lion’s mane…anything different! Monty learns a valuable lesson in the end, and hopefully children might do too.

My book has been printed on a large scale onto fabric in a triangular circus tent shape. I also printed it in a traditional hardback format.

A Monty badger soft toy with costume accessories can be dressed up as the child reads the story.

Have you completed any work experience or industry collaborations?

I have recently worked at Zoffany and Sanderson on an internship that I won through a design competition with The Wallpaper History Society.

What are your short or long-term career aspirations?

I would Monty and the Travelling Show to get published! I have lots of ideas for sequels and also for completely different picture books. Illustrating and designing fun things will always be something I want to do.

QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS

Do you have any words of wisdom that you could pass on to 1st or 2nd year students?

Make sure you like the stuff you’re designing and you’re really into it.

When were you happiest?
When I was a child and didn’t have anything to worry about

What would your superpower be?
I would be able to travel back in time to any time I fancied, and then be able to come back to reality at the click of my fingers…or I’d like to own Bernard’s watch.

What is your biggest hope for the future?
Making a living from what I enjoy doing…drawing and making things.

What are you wearing today?
Polka dot fleece pyjamas.

Your favourite location?
Home in Devon.

", "meta_title" => "Graduate Profile: Emma Van Diggele, BA (Hons), Surface Design - University of the Arts London LCC. | The Trend Boutique trends, industry interviews & jobs", "meta_description" => "", "meta_keywords" => "", "created" => "2011-07-27 16:20:34", "modified" => "2011-07-27 17:03:59", "slug" => "graduate-profile-emma-van-diggele-ba-hons-surface-design-university-of-the-arts-london-lcc", "subscription" => "0", "excerpt" => "", "start_date" => null, "end_date" => null, "location" => "", "venue" => "", "url" => "", "type_id" => "2", "side_body" => "", "thumbnail" => null ), "User" => array( "id" => "3806", "name" => "Rachel", "email" => "rachelpriddey@googlemail.com", "password" => "0356f38c958b65faa23945df7a98f955704807f3", "created" => "2011-06-20 11:50:14", "modified" => "2011-07-29 15:12:15", "group_id" => "4", "photo" => "1308683088.jpg", "course" => "Fashion Design", "university" => "Nottingham Trent", "website" => "", "facebook" => "", "twitter" => "", "myspace" => "", "favourite_designers" => null, "favourite_artists" => null, "favourite_music" => null, "favourite_films" => null, "favourite_current_trends" => null, "inspiring_places" => null, "loving_now" => null, "current_projects" => null, "future_aspirations" => null, "favourite_books" => null, "expiry" => "2011-08-15", "mailing" => "1", "terms" => "1", "telephone" => null, "mobile" => null, "year" => "2012", "graduation_date" => null, "student_number" => "N0270115", "course_leader_name" => "Gilly Staples", "date_of_birth" => null, "address_1" => null, "address_2" => null, "town" => null, "county" => null, "postcode" => null, "country" => null, "ssid" => "d0659930b0a69545e6df8535040f24f4", "last_name" => "Priddey", "referred_by" => "Sally Denton" ), "Status" => array( "id" => "1", "name" => "draft", "created" => "2009-09-18 14:53:17", "modified" => "2009-09-18 14:53:17" ), "Type" => array( "id" => "2", "name" => "article", "created" => "2009-09-18 14:14:13", "modified" => "2009-09-18 14:40:11" ), "Comment" => array(), "Video" => array(), "Category" => array(), "Tag" => array() ) $comments = array() $videos = array() $html = HtmlHelper HtmlHelper::$tags = array HtmlHelper::$base = NULL HtmlHelper::$here = NULL HtmlHelper::$params = array HtmlHelper::$action = NULL HtmlHelper::$data = NULL HtmlHelper::$_crumbs = array HtmlHelper::$__docTypes = array HtmlHelper::$helpers = NULL HtmlHelper::$webroot = NULL HtmlHelper::$themeWeb = NULL HtmlHelper::$plugin = NULL HtmlHelper::$namedArgs = NULL HtmlHelper::$argSeparator = NULL HtmlHelper::$validationErrors = NULL HtmlHelper::$__tainted = NULL HtmlHelper::$__cleaned = NULL HtmlHelper::$_log = NULL $breadcrumb = "Location: " $refUrl = array( "", "" )             $refUrl = split('/', Controller::referer());             //debug($refUrl);             $parent = $this->Article->Category->read(null, $article['Category']['0']['parent_id']); ArticlesController::view() - APP/controllers/articles_controller.php, line 54 Object::dispatchMethod() - CORE/cake/libs/object.php, line 118 Dispatcher::_invoke() - CORE/cake/dispatcher.php, line 227 Dispatcher::dispatch() - CORE/cake/dispatcher.php, line 194 [main] - APP/webroot/index.php, line 88
